A local day-trip up the Cambridge train line took me to the beautiful cathedral town of Ely.

As well as the nave, there are guided tours that go up both towers. I recommend it, as long as you are ok with tiny spiral staircases.

The lantern (octagonal tower) seen from the nave:

The tour guide took us up the tower, and opened some of the panels so that we could look down from the lantern. The room that we were standing in is a loft of timber beams, put up 700 years ago.

Above this is the roof, from where we tried to see Cambridge in the distance.
